WKA Full Contact Show
Tamworth, 13th September 2008

Team Dragon were in action on Saturday 13th September at a WKA full contact show held at Glascote social club in Tamworth. The show was run by Lance Manyer under WKA rules. The night was well run, and with 15 fights on the card there was plenty to watch - we all had a great evening. Team Dragon were represented by 21 spectators, and two of our fighters - Tom Smart and Callum 'the Thug' Thompson.

First up for the Dragons in fight 6 was fourteen year old Tom Smart, fighting 3 x 1.5 minute rounds. This was a rematch from May when Tom beat a strong and well matched fighter - Matt Lees from Winspers gym. Matt came out from the start and tried to push Tom back. After two rounds and a bleeding nose, the fight was too close to pick a winner, as both fighters came out with all guns blazing. The bell went for the end of the 3rd round and it was still too close to be able to know which way the judges would go. The ref called both fighters to the centre and the decision was a draw. This fight was flat out in every round and credit goes to the fitness of both lads. Thanks again to Matt Lees for an excellent fight. Both lads showed that they are up and coming class fighters.

The last fight of the night - and top billing - was eighteen year old Callum 'Thug' Tompson in action for the Dragons. His opponent from Ashby kickboxing gym was a very seasoned fighter Johnny Stewart, in a fight for the WKA -83kg British full contact title over 5 x 2 minute rounds. As the bell went for round 1 Callum settled stright into his rhythm and showed his opponent that he was in charge. A well placed kick had Johnny on the back foot, then a strong cross had him fall back into the ropes with Stewart smilling and nodding his head. Callum took round 1 with ease and gave him a boost in confidence.

Round 2 saw his opponent knocked to the floor a couple of times but the Thug was well paced and took his time winning round 2. In the third round, Callum took the pace up to another level which caused all sorts of problems for Johnny, but this lad had a good chin. Callum won every round and was unlucky not to stop his opponent. After round 5 there was no doubt who had won, and with the Thug's hand being lifted to the air and the belt being put around his waist, he realised that all his hard work and training had been worth it. Well done to the WKA British champion: Callum "the Thug" Thompson!

Pete's comments:

I can only say a few words about these two lads - wherever they go, they show a great performance and are great role models for our up and coming fighters. Tom well exceeds his age in his maturity and strength, while Callum is proving that he is going to be a hard opponent for anyone.

WELL DONE, LADS - we are all proud of you!
